Like its Latin-based namesake meaning “to the highest degree” suggests, Irvine-based wealth management firm Apriem Advisors came into 2017 at full speed and hasn’t eased up on the accelerator at any point since.
An HKA client since 2016, Apriem started the year by surpassing the coveted $500 million milestone for the amount of assets under management (AUM). In addition to being a nice round – and sizeable – number, $500 million AUM shot Apriem into an esteemed league of wealth management firms, which called for an increased national media push. Of course, HKA was happy to help provide this. Recently, the firm’s Chief Investment Officer Benjamin Lau was quoted in major media outlets, including CNBC.com, TheStreet and WealthManagement.com.
Historically, much of Apriem’s success can be traced back to the vision of co-founder Harmon Kong, a hands-on leader who built the company from the ground up in 1998 – focused on creating a family environment where wealth managers work with clients to pursue their own unique version of wealth, happiness and purpose. Harmon has grown Apriem, which is part of the elite Charles Schwab Advisor Network, at a recent annual clip of 20 percent, and he’s done this organically, without any mergers or acquisitions.
Fueling this growth are two major Apriem initiatives: The Industrial Retirees Practice and Women of Wisdom. The former is the brainchild of Apriem Partner Landon Yoshida, who methodically and persistently built a network of retired and soon-to-be retired ExxonMobil employees who worked at the company’s refinery in Torrance. Landon doubled down on the success of the ExxonMobil program by opening the practice to current and former workers in Southern California’s massive aerospace industry. Landon’s impactful work and prominent role with Apriem was recently covered by local and industry media alike, including the Orange County Register and Plan Adviser.
Women of Wisdom is a unique Apriem program that taps into another critical economic needle-mover – women. Headed by Apriem President/Principal Rhonda Ducote and Wealth Manager Megan Piermont, the firm is actively educating and empowering a growing and influential number of female investors through a series of Women of Wisdom – or WOW – outreach events. In March, Apriem hosted a well-attended women-only event about insurance, while a special WOW afternoon tea is to be held at the elegant Sherman Gardens in May. Additionally, WOW is playing a major role in supporting UCI’s Women’s Wellness Day (another HKA client) on May 5, while Financial Poise is running a monthly WOW-focused column.
HKA looks forward to supporting this innovative and growth-focused company for years to come, knowing Apriem’s blueprint for success is fully baked into the etymology of its name.
