Ruth Velez has worked her way to the top. The new general manager of Fairhaven Memorial Park & Mortuary in Santa Ana, California, began there in an entry-level position in 1996.
“I started at the bottom doing decedent affairs. Those were the times when you had to go and physically get a death certificate signed by a physician and meet them wherever you could before a service could take place,” Velez said. “Plus, you had to hand-type every death certificate.”
Velez had to go to local hospitals, medical offices, restaurants and even a golf course once to meet a physician. Now she’s in charge of the 73-acre Fairhaven grounds that opened in 1911.
